This imperial IPA is as illustrious as its namesake.
RUSSIAN RIVER PLINY THE ELDER
Pliny the Elder was a military commander, philosopher, author and naturalist—a notable figure in Ancient Rome. Pliny is said to have been one of the first to write about hops, so it’s fitting that Russian River Brewing Company’s outstanding imperial IPA bears his name.
Pliny masterfully mingles Amarillo, Centennial, CTZ and Simcoe hops. The beer has a honey hue, a creamy head and a resinous, floral nose. The taste is delightfully peppery and piney with a slight orangey sweetness. It’s a remarkably smooth and balanced beer. At 8 percent ABV, it’s dangerously drinkable.
Pliny is a world-class beer and its supply is limited, which makes it even more desirable. You may be tempted to cellar the beer, but heed the many warnings on the label. To fully preserve this awesome hop aroma, flavor, and character, it’s best stored cold and enjoyed fresh.
Serve in a snifter or tulip glass at 40-45 F.
Suggested Food Pairings: Pliny the Elder needs a strong pairing. Try this flavorful beer with extra sharp white cheddar, a spicy Indian dish such as chicken tikka masala, or carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.
